Sunny Shum

Sunny is a foreign patent agent as well as a registered U.S. Patent Practitioner in the Chicago office of Ladas & Parry.

Sunny specializes in preparing and prosecuting foreign patent applications in technical fields covering mechanical/electrical engineering. His practice also extends to IT/software and consumer electronics, and he has substantial experience with advising clients on clearance/validity questions and patent oppositions. Prior to entering the profession as a patent practitioner, Sunny gained substantive experience in auditing IP portfolios and conducting clearance studies specifically on printing machinery and consumables.

Sunny obtained his Bachelor degree with Distinction in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Technology, Sydney. He also holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Hong Kong. Sunny obtained his qualification as a Chinese Patent Attorney in 2013 and had been practicing in Hong Kong ever since.

Prior to joining Ladas & Parry, Sunny has spent years working in a sizeable international law firm and a UK-based IP law firm focusing on patent and design matters.
